Golden Knights try not to think of Stanley Cup returning to Vegas on verge of title

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:56:55 GMT

Chandler Stephenson knows what this is like.Five years ago, he and his Washington Capitals teammates went into Las Vegas and won the Stanley Cup, beating the Golden Knights in Game 5 of the final. Now he’s on the Golden Knights, who leave Florida on the verge of winning their first championship.“It’s a different game than the other ones: There’s a lot more emotion, a lot more everything,” Stephenson said. “It’s one win away from a lot of dreams for a lot of guys.”A dream they’re trying not to think about — at least not yet.Vegas can hoist the Stanley Cup as soon as Tuesday by beating the Panthers on home ice. But the immediate task for players and coaches is not to dwell on how close they are.Veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who captained the St. Louis Blues to their first title in franchise history four years ago, said it’s possible to overthink things in this situation. His approach now?“Try and get your brain away from it,” Pietrangelo said. “Get some ...

Guardiola looks to build on Man City success in Champions League after finally conquering Europe

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:56:55 GMT

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Almost immediately after leading Manchester City to its first Champions League title on Saturday, Pep Guardiola spoke of the need to build on that success.Real Madrid’s record haul of 14 European Cups is safe for some time yet – but there is every reason to believe City will go on to win the competition again and again. This was, after all, its second final in three seasons. The 1-0 win against Inter Milan in Istanbul’s Ataturk Olimpiyat Stadium had been coming. And the wealth of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, combined with Guardiola’s apparent insatiable drive for perfection, means City has the potential to become even stronger in the coming years.Guardiola is a huge fan of Michael Jordan. And just as one title wasn’t enough for the Chicago Bulls icon, who went on to win six NBA championships, Guardiola knows City’s legacy in Europe depends on repeated success.Madrid is a serial winner, having lifted four Champions League titles between 2014 and 2018. That is t...

Section of heavily traveled I-95 collapses in Philadelphia after tanker truck catches fire

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 08:56:55 GMT

By RON TODT (Associated Press)PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An elevated section of Interstate 95 collapsed early Sunday in Philadelphia after a tanker truck carrying flammable cargo caught fire, closing a heavily traveled segment of the East Coast’s main north-south highway indefinitely, authorities said.Transportation officials warned of extensive delays and street closures and urged drivers to avoid the area in the northeast corner of the city. Officials said the tanker contained a petroleum product that may have been hundreds of gallons of gasoline. The fire was reported to be under control.Video from the scene showed a massive concrete slab had fallen from I-95 onto the road below. There were no reports of injuries. The northbound lanes of I-95 were gone, and the southbound lanes were “compromised” due to heat from the fire, said Derek Bowmer, battalion chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department. Runoff from the fire or perhaps broken gas lines were causing explosion...

Group pushes automatic crash alerts in cars

WASHINGTON — Consumer Reports is launching a campaign to pressure automakers to include free technology in vehicles that calls emergency responders in case of a crash. Most automakers provide this technology in new vehicles, the safety advocate says, but charge $100 per year or more to enable it.The effort is aimed at General Motors Co., Stellantis NV, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Corp., Subaru Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and Tesla Inc. — all of which charge for or do not offer automatic crash notification in new vehicles sold in the United States.“People injured in a crash shouldn’t have critical medical care delayed because they choose not to pay for features like remote start or a mobile hot spot,” said William Wallace, Consumer Reports’ associate director of safety policy. “It’s one thing for automakers to charge extra for conveniences, but this is about safety, and safety isn’t optional.”Automatic crash notification uses a cell co...
