American Indian students could attend college at no cost under legislation that has passed both the Minnesota House and Senate, but the two chambers disagree on how to spend the rest of higher education’s share of a historic state budget surplus. The House passed its omnibus higher-education bill last week, and the Senate did so on Tuesday. In keeping with budget targets DFL leaders announced last month, the bills call for a $650 million, or 18.5 percent, increase in state funding for higher education in the next biennium out of a projected $17.5 billion surplus. The House bill is heavy on system-level funding, including $75 million for a two-year tuition freeze at Minnesota State’s 26 colleges and seven universities. The Senate, meanwhile, focuses on targeted grants for disadvantaged students, including a $178 million provision that would cover all tuition and fees for any public two- and four-year college students from families with adjusted gross incomes under $80,000.“We built a bu...

Loons might be without key defender against lethal Sounders

Minnesota United has allowed multiple goals in two consecutive games and there is uncertainty along the Loons’ back line going into Saturday’s match against the dangerous Seattle Sounders. After giving up two goals apiece to Orlando City and Chicago Fire in a pair of 2-1 defeats, Loons left back Kemar Lawrence has been away from the team this week as he supports a family member dealing with a health issue.MNUFC is hopeful the Jamaican can return to Minnesota before the team travels for Washington on Thursday. If not, backup fullback Zarek Valentin likely would return to the starting XI at 9:30 p.m. CT Saturday at Lumen Field. The Loons (3-2-2, 11 points) were beaten in wide areas before Orlando and Chicago netted goals over the past two weeks. Can a doorbell ring justify a 'stand your ground' shooting?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 00:03:56 GMT

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andrew Lester had already gone to bed when the doorbell rang a little before 10 p.m. He got up, grabbed a gun and went to check it out. Seeing a Black male appearing to pull the handle of the front door, police say the 84-year-old white man opened fire. No questions asked.Lester told police he believed someone was attempting to break into his house. That belief — though wrong — could become a defense as Lester faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action for shooting 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, an honor student who went to the wrong Kansas City address while attempting to pick up his younger siblings. The case, which has stirred outrage across the country, could shine a light on one of the most common self-defense policies in the U.S — the right to protect yourself in your home. Most states have some version of a “castle doctrine," either by law or court precedent, that says residents don't have to retreat when threatened in their ho...

Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn thinks Cale Makar’s defense is undervalued entering Stanley Cup Playoff matchup

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 00:03:56 GMT

The Seattle Kraken’s top defenseman agrees with an idea the Avs have pondered. As Vince Dunn evaluated the challenges of matching up against Cale Makar in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, he made sure to highlight the Avalanche defenseman’s, well, actual defense.“He’s a very dynamic player back there not just offensively but defensively,” Dunn said before Game 1 Tuesday at Ball Arena. “A lot of the time when guys put up numbers, (people) don’t really look at the defensive part of the game for those players. But he does a solid job on both ends of the ice.”Which begs the question: What does Dunn consider to be the true nature of the Norris Trophy for best NHL defenseman?“Well, I think if you want to change the definition of what the trophy is, then it should only be how many points you’re getting — but the definition of the trophy is the best all-around defenseman,” Dunn told The Post. “And sometimes it’s jus...
