MADISON, Ill. – Firefighters have a tough job no matter the weather, but when the heat and humidity reach these extreme levels, it can make even the smallest fire feel like an inferno.Departments from all over southern Illinois sent crews, equipment, and water to the scene of a massive blaze Sunday into Monday at 111 Salvage off Illinois Route 111 in Madison, Illinois. The extra bodies were needed not just because of the size of the fire, but also because of the extreme heat. The fire broke out late Sunday and burned through the night. Fires like this in weather like this are an especially dangerous combination, according to Jason Wilson, Shift Commander with the Granite City Fire Department. Close Thanks for signing up! But Colts’ Pro Bowl RB doesn’t solve Denver’s No. 1 problem: depth

Jonathan Taylor is a killer off-road tire, slightly worn, on a car with dodgy brakes. Uphill, the grip is incredible. Downhill, you’ll still be grabbing rosary beads. The NFL’s leading rusher in 2021 wants a trade out of Indy, with the Colts reportedly, as of Monday night, willing to oblige. Meanwhile, the Broncos have run the ball this month like an F-450 Super Duty and pass-protected like a Peel P50. So far, coach Sean Payton has picked up largely where Week 17 of last season left off, leading with a strong ground game, in which Russell Wilson’s right arm is a side dish and not the main course. In keeping with that theme, there’s a part of Broncos Country that could picture Taylor, a power back with sprinter’s speed, breaking tackles in orange and blue and keeping Patrick Mahomes bored on the sidelines. You could even tell yourself Taylor might be the new Beast Mode to old Russ, a formula that worked pretty darn well a decade earlier. But have you looked at the price tag? OAKLAND — On July 11, an Oakland patrol officer responded to a call of three teen girls who appeared to be in distress while a man in a vehicle chased after them, but as the officer arrived in his patrol car, only the girls remained; the suspect and his Lexus were already speeding away.Over the next month, sex crimes detectives would end up building a case that authorities say exemplifies both the dangers of sex trafficking and of meeting strangers online. The end result came on Aug. 11, when 30-year-old Lennard Davis, a resident of Oakland and Stockton, was arrested on human trafficking, child molestation, assault, and child pornography charges. Now, authorities believe that the July 11 incident may have staved off the crimes from taking an even darker turn; Davis was allegedly keeping all three girls — aged 13 to 15 — at his Oakland home on Walnut Avenue, and authorities say he planned to take them to Las Vegas on July 13 as part of a scheme to force them into sex...Giants’ skid continues against wild-card leading Phillies as SF falls into bottom playoff position

PHILADELPHIA — The most dangerous portion of the Phillies’ lineup is loaded with lefties. Bryce Harper. Kyle Schwarber. Bryson Stott. It’s one reason why the Giants identified Tuesday as the ideal time for Kyle Harrison, the top left-handed pitching prospect in the game, to make his debut. And it explains why on Monday, manager Gabe Kapler wanted to string together as many southpaws as possible to begin their three-game set. They didn’t last long. Turns out, these Phillies can hit lefties, too.Scott Alexander opened and didn’t make it out of the first inning before handing off to Sean Manaea, and by the time Edmundo Sosa tripled to deep center field in the fourth inning, marking an end to Manaea’s night, the Giants were in a hole they never recovered from in a 10-4 loss.Good luck, Kyle.In the first of three games against the team directly in front of them in the wild-card standings, the Giants (65-60) looked outmatched, were outplayed, and, rather than ma...Person shot near 24th & Mission in SF

DETROIT (AP) — Yan Gomes and Nick Madrigal hit doubles in the ninth inning and the Chicago Cubs held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-6 on Monday night. The Cubs squandered a three-run lead in the eighth and quickly went back ahead.Gomes led off the next inning with a double and Madrigal followed with an RBI double. Madrigal later scored to put Chicago ahead by two, an extra run it needed after Matt Vierling’s single pulled Detroit within a run.Seiya Suzuki hit a homer for the second straight day and a three-run second inning helped the Cubs take an early lead. Chicago went on to earn a third victory in a row, keeping its lead for the NL’s final wild card, but manager David Ross and veteran players on the team know there’s a lot of baseball left to be played this season.“At the trade deadline, we didn’t win anything,” Ross said. “At the end of August, we’re not going to have won anything.
